Poggenphol Reflection
Design does not happen in an aesthetic vacuum or techniques. It happens from communication between the client and designer. By clients interacting with a design a designer is used more by observing the actions.
When design does
1.bringing the hidden in plain sight with prototypes
-serves in future development
-it creates a tangible idea. It is often a vague or abstract idea that can be tested.
- puts a prototype out for people to use as a reference and focus
- allows idea to be revised and synthesized
- extends and develops the meaning or concept based of its current state
- the prototype leads the client to finding the solution through the process of discovering how it works
Technologies Influence
- designer use is because the believe it will benefit there design
- the nature of this research process is organic. It is not predetermined
- science is not necessary to engage with users and observe patterns
- designers need to observe users engaging with prototypes
- designers should understand what the prototypes are like in their context
Prototypes
A way of connecting and communicating with the designer through material
1. conceptual prototypes( early in design stage)
- using a diagram to externalize idea
-not good for communication
-communication to people in a team or group
2. Behavioral prototypes (early and based of knowledge of user)
- address and reveal behavior
-promote active use
-stimulate computer interactions
-cuts cost
-avoids children to respond to the idea without being intimidated by technology or a finished appearance by using paper
- can be a computer game
3. Procedural prototypes (middle stage)
- examine logic of a system, find out what is missing, confusing, or redundant
- two kinds: abstract process diagram and concrete hyperlinked story
- check logic and consistency in game development
-organize logic, sequences
4. Appearance prototypes (late stage)
-develop late is design
-used to generate feedback from team members and users
-qualitatitve: color, size, shape, weight, etc and associative nature: metaphors, references to other objects and experiences
- can be 3-dimensional
- prototypes commonly overlap with each other
-establishes aesthetic, quality characteristics

Reflection
More Ethnography!
Ethnography gives designer a better understanding of the design. It give insight into the meaning behind why and how to make something. The design becomes better with the more knowledge found about who is going to use and what purpose its taking on. I find this very important because if a designer knew nothing about how I used a knife then I would not want them designing one for me. When I see a design that is flawlessly executed I am more inclined to purchase an object. If it improves the quality of work, I will use it more. It is important for a designer to have empathy so that ours lives are made easier with design. After reading this I realize I take design for granted knowing all the hard work that is put into an ethnographic study. I also realize there is alot of behind the scenes effort that goes into design. There is quite a process that is involved with collecting data and analyzing it. The data can be in form of all kinds of medium like video, audio, photos. This is inspiring to me because ethnography allows the ordinary to have beauty. Without it being staged the process can result in meaning. These meanings result in a successful design not one that will offend anyone. It making designing straight and to the point which communicates to the viewer clearly. This is done by immersing yourself in whatever part of a culture a designer selects and observing reality. Ethnography guides a designer through a process to see what is important to focus on and achieve_RCJH

Ethnography Reading
What is Ethnography Reflection
I have participated in an Ethnography before so this reading supplemented what I already know by building on it. Ethnography is a conduction of research to try and explain something about a counterculture. This is what I believed Ethnography was but it is much more based on a design perspective. Design can be used most effectively when the designer is educated on their target culture. Without knowing the norms of the culture a designer would fail to create something that would be beneficial to it. The process is engaging with the culture in the space and produces tunnels that would lead to the meaning behind interactions. The action of the people will yield better results that speaking two them because they are often different.
This reading explains as far as Ethnography goes there are important factors to investigate. How people organize, solve problems the roles people assume, and what people carry will all lead to answer the meaning behind the cultural norms.
After gathering all this information and knowing how to make sense of it according to the reading are totally opposite. An Ethnographer must analyze the data with is the most rewarding part of the process. Like an experiment their needs to be a problem. For a designer the first step is to figure out the problem so an overarching goal can be determined. The second step is to rethink the question because it could lead to other possibilities that were not initially sought out. One key point that seemed important to me was that thinking through the goal before going out in the field. This could eliminate many problems and wasted time and effort. Having a clear spot and game plan in place before one goes into the field and analyzes their data. Overall this reading eased my mind knowing that the results can be had by asking opened ended questions to generate a conversation. There is a lot involved that goes into this type of research but it can be rewarding.
