Foldsperation

Hello Fellow designers,

While making my fold textures for today's assignment I was mostly using of pure creativity. This worked  really well but was also a huge test. I desired to do a lot of overlapping with layers of paper to allow  the light to be shown through at different strengths. This was what I thought would be the most interesting technique and use the source of light the best. By doing this created a window shutter technique that was successful. It was the process of cutting and folding back pieces of paper to reflect light off of the angles. This created different a range of light like I was going for. Geometric folds were also an interesting play of the paper and I would like to explore this technique more. The one organic fold that I did turned out to be beautiful. It was a technique base off of the-dieing t-shirts were the fabric is gathered up in the center. When put up to the light source of my living room it created soft and delicate shadows within the shape. I was down to few folds left, I went on pinterest. Here is what if like from the boards.

Individual word: Follow

five refined black and white compositions
20 hand constructed word collages were made from my chosen word follow. A six inch by six inch template was used as well as futura typeface print out and black paper. They were critiqued base of visual communication of the definition and how the form supports  each design. The design with the largest f, an arrow, traffic lines, and spiral were communicating well. A suggestion made about the spiral concept is just using the single word instead of repeating each letter multiple times. Another suggestion for the traffic lines was have no concept of letters passing eachother. Also using closer for my design would be communicating it better. This feedback was then implicated into Illustrator designs using the pathfinder tool and critiqued again. Then five refined composition were created bases on that were mounted on museum board and displayed in class.

Letter Reflection

Here is a reflection to the Parts of A Letter Reading,

There is more complexity to typography than commonly known. It's a serious medium and has a long history. Terms are used to indicate parts of each type of different fonts i.e. bracket. The imaginary line that each letter of the alphabet matches up with has three components; baseline, cap height, and x-height. Each letter is characteristically different because of the marks it has or where it falls these components. There is both visual harmony and complexity to the alphabet. The vocabulary is correlated to the technical parts of letters. They are used in identification of specific typefaces. The more a designer learns about each part will help them create a more harmonious design. There are twenty five different parts of the alphabet that include all the letters, but all the letters do not include all the terms. The all have a stroke width. Some lowercase letters have different parts than the uppercase and visa versa. All the components of a single letter together make up the entire letter. Some fonts have different versions of each component and that is used to identify them with what font they are. Over all this reading was informative and understandable.

Writing Toolbox

Summary of Writing Toolbox

Concept Maps, mind maps freewriting, brainwriting are all idea generators for both written and visual projects. These came about from scholars like Leonardo Da vinci. Mind makes are known for using not only words but also color, pictures, and dimension. It break down a large question or idea into more manageable sizes to help designers organize their thoughts and problems. This like any other form or technique takes practice but it helpful for visual thinkers. This maps can go as far away from the starting point as they need to and often end up in new places that are worthy of learning more about. Sometimes the end result will spark another avenue that would of never been discovered.
Concept Maps are a visual language like telling a story. It is a map putting many words together like mind maps. Concept Maps are different because the enhance understanding and analyzing complex information. They are used to identify in what place an object can be designed for. They are used as a spark that ignites further writing or visual language.
Free writing are visual thoughts just like Art and Design. A lot of discovery happens through this process and it takes practice. There is unfocused and focused freewriting that can go completely off topic like journaling where you write whatever feeling or thoughts come to mind or addresses a certain topic. It is an easy way to stimulate free thought.
Brainwriting is for group projects. The group uses a 6-3-5 exercise to gets ideas down on paper.
Lastly, listing is a writing technique that helps generate ideas fast. Design gets problem down to essential elements. This idea generation can be used for written and visual projects with outlines following to shape further ideas.

Summary of IDEO Video

This is a summary of the IDEO deep dive video from class.


This company come up with ninety new products each year. They had a challenge to reinvent the shopping cart. Their main concern is not about the object they are design, but more about the innovation with their process.
In the preliminary part of IDEO design process is to identify the problems of the shopping cart. They found safety, theft, and checkout issues as well as interviewed people who make, use know this object well and wanted to help with finding the grocery items the shopper is looking for. They work about9 hours a day, not in an office, but leaving for research, designing, and brainstorming.
Their process is broken down into the following steps. First brainstorming takes place, then they will start building while encouraging wild ideas. They see there work ethic as focused chaos, not organized chaos. So there a lot of trial and error happening with each team having a "needs" area to work on.
The toy departement is the easiest to design for according to the IDEO team.
Also they have discovered good ideas come faster in playful atmosphere.
By using this process they were able to re-design the shopping cart to give it 90 degree turning wheels so it can roll side to side and not just front and back. The new cart has a high tech scanner to skip check out, baskets for kids with liftable handle bar. It is also designed to prevent theft by eliminating the basket of the cart and lining sides with hooks for the grocery bags to hang on. Also a skanner was built in to price the items before purchasing. These new factors summed up the solution to each problem laid out before building the new cart.

Summary of Project one What is a Good Design?

The first project is done, sigh with relief, here's few things I've left out to tie it my poster together. I hope you all think your posters came out well because I enjoyed seeing all of the good work you did.

What makes it a good design?

 Innovative because it is designed to be used with advancing technology. 

Understandable because it is super easy to understand. There is one switch and two inputs. It twist open and locks shut. 

Honest and has little design as possible: It is edited down to a pure speaker, nothing more and nothing less. It speaks loud and clear what it is and does not fool consumer. Also, you know the function by looking at it and it does, it plays music aloud.

Environmentally- friendly: USB rechargeable lithium battery

Aesthetic: soft-touch, strong, and durable materials.

This is the image that I used for my final poster design. It was a good fit but the color wasn't as bright as I would of liked it to be when it printed. It's a beautiful piece of worth none the less.
